北マケドニアの首都、スコピエ。
旅の目的地はクロアチアで、ドブロブニクに向かうレンタカーを借りるためにたまたまスコピエに降り立った。
北マケドニアは、かつてのユーゴスラビアの一部。首都スコピエはバルカン半島のほぼ中心、ベオグラードとアテネの間に位置する。
スコピエには、やがてエーゲ海に達するヴァルダル川が流れ、世界を二つに分けている。川の南側は巨大な彫像がやたらと並ぶ西洋的な街で現代的な喧噪があり、北側にはターキッシュ・バザールとモスク、廃墟になった城がある。古い石造りの橋がふたつの世界を文字通り、橋渡ししている。
バザールには暮らしに必要な各種の店が軒を連ねる。並ぶ品々はトルコ風、ギリシャ風、ロシア風、ときに中央アジア風でもあった。バルカン半島をめぐるさまざまな国の文化が少しずつ、顔を覗かせる。
炭火でぐつぐつと煮られている豆のポット、ぐりぐりと焼かれている肉、手動のプレス機で絞られるザクロジュース。
バルカン半島のゆたかさが集うバザールには、さまざまな眼をした人々が行き交っていた。
Heading to Croatia, I got off at Skopje to find a rental car with which I will head off to Dubrovnik.
Skopje is the capital of North Macedonia, situated in the center of the Balkan Peninsula.
Macedonia’s longest river Vardar that flows in the Aegean Sea divides the city into two parts, the oriental - inherited from the Ottoman Empire and occidental - that includes the modern features of the city. The symbol of Skopje, the famous Stone Bridge that resisted all the misfortunes of the city, is the communication between these separated worlds.
In Turkish market,traditional specialties prepared from the hands of the welcoming and friendly people.
The journey had secret destination of which I was unaware, as always.
